Quilted cotton is forgiving. The main way people ruin one of these is heat.
Everyday cleaning
Spot clean with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. Blot rather than rub — rubbing a printed cotton is what lifts the colour. Let it dry away from a radiator.
Washing
- Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, inside a pillowcase or a laundry bag.
- Mild detergent. No bleach and no oxygen brightener — both attack printed pattern.
- Empty every pocket and close every zip first. An open zip in a drum will snag the quilting.
Drying — this is the part that matters
Do not tumble dry. The wadding compresses unevenly and the bag comes out lumpy, permanently. Reshape it while damp, stand it up, and let it air dry. A full day is normal for a weekender.
Ironing
Cool iron on the reverse if you must. Never press directly onto the quilted face — it flattens the channels that give the bag its shape.
Storage
Store it stuffed with a towel or with paper rather than folded flat. Quilted bags keep a crease for a long time.
Fading
Printed cotton fades in direct sun over a long period. A beach bag will show it first. Cold washes and shade drying slow it down considerably.
